POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

After Root Canal Treatment / Retreatment

Contact your restorative dentist's office without delay to arrange to have the tooth restored with a permanent restoration. Placement of a permanent restoration should be performed within 3-4 weeks following completion of your endodontic therapy to prevent loss of the temporary filling and possible re-contamination of the root canals.

Please avoid chewing on the affected side until your restorative dentist has placed a protective restoration on the treated tooth. The treated tooth will likely be tender to biting/chewing/tapping on the tooth for the first few days. This is normal and no cause for alarm. While your tooth may be tender after treatment, it will become progressively more comfortable within a few days.

Any post-operative tenderness is best alleviated by taking 400-800mg of ibuprofen (Advil) every 6 hours for the next 2-3 days (not to exceed 3200mg/day).

If you are unable to take ibuprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or aspirin, you may take 650mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol) every 4-6 hours (not to exceed 3900mg/day).

Please remember that the consumption of alcohol is not recommended while taking these medications.

Should you continue to experience post-operative discomfort that is not alleviated by the above medications, or should you develop swelling in the affected area, please contact our office.
