Frequently Asked Questions

Should I worry about complications?
The vast majority of endodontic treatment is successfully completed without complication. Nevertheless, there are potential complications that can occur, albeit infrequently. The most common complication involves the unforeseen separation of an instrument (file) used to clean and shape the root canal space. An instrument that separates can often be retrieved; if retrieval is not possible, the instrument will become incorporated into the final root canal filling.

Please remember that root canal therapy is an attempt to retain a tooth which may otherwise require extraction. Although root canal therapy has a very high degree of success, it cannot be guaranteed. Occasionally a tooth which has had root canal therapy may require retreatment, endodontic surgery or even extraction.
